I found this Lincoln Cent a few days ago and can't tell if it is a RPM (FS-01-1987D-501) or other. From what I understand this is the last year that mint marks were hand punched into the dies. The faint 2nd image appears to be thru to the zinc. It is in the perfect position for the above-mentioned error but the prominent D shows no impression. So I am not sure if it is an RPM or not. Thanks for any input any of you can provide.

That is split plating, no RPM. Cents went through 1989 for hand punched mm.

So, I was wondering why you might think you had the FS-501 and maybe you were comparing it to a coin that also had split plating and you maybe thought the split plating was what made it the variety. I did a side by side comparison of VV's example of the RPM with yours, both have split plating but have tried to show you what makes the variety different. The blue arrows are pointing at split plating, which is very common on copper plated zinc cents and the yellow arrows are pointing at the re-punching that created the RPM on FS-501, hope this helps.

Thank you all for your information. After reading your opinions I agree. I was not overly optimistic about this being the mentioned error, and you have confirmed this. Thank you! I am learning more every day.
