In the same tube as the BIE progression, I found this oddity.

What are some opinions on this one? There are odd marks in several places in and around the 9. It reminds me a little of 1958D-1MM-021.

Another odd mark is a gouge or scrape running N/S through the "BIE" area.

Very peculiar looking but do not think it is anything other than die damage of some sort. If you look at the shot you have of the full date and mm, you can see the curve continue on around, on both ends, as it meets the 9, not the shape of the D. Very odd looking though.

This is a weird die. It has the overall appearance of almost a VEDS coin, but does show some die flow lines in the field and what looks like a die crack on the truncation of the bust. VEDS coins often have weird looking, shallow scratches and such that disappear as the die wears, and I think this is one such scratch, but a die crack so early? I bet the die didn't strike very many coins before failing.

Edited to add: why don't we see more Cuds on the truncation of the bust? This is a common place for die cracks, but how many Cuds have you seen there?

Do you mean the area of VDB specifically or anywhere between the lower bust and the rim? I see more cracks than Cuds there but would say that is a common area for Cuds in general. I just found a small unlisted Cud on 1965 in this area. I'll post that one shortly.

Thanks for your input on what you're seeing here.

Here is a photo of the BIE region with a very unusual scratch running through it. Lots of little bumps and scratches in and around B & E but I'm not seeing a
break here (except for the lower B loop).

Looks pretty mangled. That's a combo of die gouges and post strike hits I think.

Regarding Cuds, I meant specifically at the truncation of the bust.

As I happened to be looking through the mid 60's Cuds I noticed quite a few in this location. I believe 10 of the first 15 Cuds for 1966 involve this specific area of the bust.

Hah! I was out in left field. Looks like many of the obverse Cuds are related to the truncation.
