CCF, Two in one day! This one should be fairly quick. As stated I found a 2013-D LSC with really nice colors on both Obverse and Reverse but my main concern is the black spots on the Reverse? I know it could be all kinds of crud but I see a lot of coins with what looks to be some type of bacteria or something that is indicated by black spots all over the coin. So I guess I have two questions, (#1) What are the black Dalmatian looking spots seen on Lincoln Cents? See Reverse of this coin for example, I will add more as I come by them. (#2) What is the best method for cleaning a coin with said black spots? I don't want to add a coin to my album if it can possibly spread? Thanks in advance CCF and if there is a better place for this post that I didn't see feel free to move if required MODS. Excuse is "because Newbie".

Final Example! Here we have a 2014-D Lincoln Shield cent Reverse. I think everyone gets the drift after four examples of the Black Death. Called such because it ruins some pretty good looking Cents I find. Hopefully I have provided enough pictures for a decent diagnosis. I guess if I had a lab and the proper equipment I could sample the Black Death and figure out the true composition but I am fairly certain the MASTERS here at CCF can help diagnose this without such measures, although that would be fun. -Kyle

Clean coins with pure acetone only. Black spots are stains from a variety of ways and considered to devalue a coin. Nice toning on some of your coins.

Welp, there goes about an hour of my life with the swipe of my finger. As I made this really awesome response and was about to finalize I accidentally swiped and voila, GONE
It must not have been as awesome as I thought I guess cause everything happens for a reason.

Thanks for the comment oddguy I am keeping the 2013-D LSC, that is until one I like better comes along, and the rest are for example of the Black Death.

I am shocked acetone is good for cleaning our Cents?!?! Am I correct to assume that if we do use acetone we should be aware that the toning will be at risk as well?

If possible could any answers about cleaning be formatted as such:

Equation:

Solution + Tool = Cause/Condition

Examples:

Warm running water & dish soap + Fingers = General Cleaning

Acetone + Towel = Mild gunk & grime

CLP + Brillo Pad = Extreme Corrosion Removal

I think if we could break it down Barney Style it would help out a lot of us Newbs with cleaning criteria and how to clean as to not devalue our treasures! Add a description after Solution/Tool/Cause as well if that's not too much to ask. I am also open to any other suggestions about the Black Death! I can get onboard with it being stains as oddguy and Dearborn suggest but from what I have seen under the microscope I suspect there may be more to it. Please know this is not arrogance or ignorance (possibly) but inquisition and the search for knowledge.

P.S. The last example with CLP is a JOKE! Please do not get our coins enemy the Brillo pad anywhere near them unless you are trying to make it look like a blank, a planchet or like it was dragged across the street by a car!

Another way to safely conserve a coin is Verdi-Care. I don't think it would help in this situation though.

Well. No need for any of that noise. Here is a link to the Verdi-Care program results. They mention a few different products and talk about a couple different techniques for cleaning as well as a name for the Black Death I have been seeing, I believe. The black death can be stains and/or verdigris(possibly carbonate type) both of which the product E&V recommends can either remove or at a minimum stop the spread and conserve coins, restore luster. That's awesome and for anyone who is interested here is a link to before and after Verdi-Care uses and a quick description of cause/condition and results.

Edit: Here is a FAQ from the company as well that answers a substantial amount about techniques and procedures as well as removal of ALL TYPES OF NASTINESS

Time to go shopping for some cleaning/conservation products!
Thanks for the help everyone I would consider this thread closed as I have either the answer or resource to get the answers I need! Thank you CCF! Specifically oddguy, Dearborn, and E&V for getting me on the road I need!
