I have some silver coins that have been in albums for the last 40 years. A few are tarnished along the outer edge. I'm afraid it may be due to the materials of the old albums. So I planning to replace the albums. Since I personally don't like the looks of the coins which leads me to my main question. Do I take the chance and clean the coins? If I should clean, how and what would you recommend I use?

Hi bill069. I dip silver coins for a few seconds in E-Z-Est coin cleaner. I works great but should not be used on high value coins. I don't use on coins that would grade under EF either; mainly because it leaves blast white surfaces that don't look natural on worn coins.
I'd recommend trying it on some low value bullion coins and see if you like the results.

Oh Jeeze Pleeze don't clean the toning off the coins that they took 40 years to get. I love toned coins. If you don't like toned coins, others do, sell them and replace them with same in untoned condition. Dipping coins to remove a natural tone also removes value in most cases. Please post an image of your tarnished coins. It's a good thing you asked first before cleaning your coins. You might have saved yourself a lot of disappointment.

I see one image, and it is small, but I personally would not do a thing to that Morgan dollar except put in in an airtite holder for the rest of its days. Others may differ in opinion, it is your coin and you sure can do as you wish but there are some collectors that would much rather have it original, and some find that more attractive than you might think.

wheezydao, I appreciate your comments, thanks. I'm torn between Don't Clean and Eye Appeal.

I'd hold off on dipping that coin Bill. There is some significant value there if it grades MS.
I can't tell much from the image but it looks to be in good shape. Take it to a coin shop if you can and have someone view it in hand and offer you some advice.
I'd put it in an Air-Tite for safe keeping in the interim.

Great Coin Do Not Clean it
Although I do not collect Morgans - I would rather buy it from you than have you condemn it to a Death by cleaning - you will find many other members who feel the same way

I personally would buy that coin before a blast white comparable of the same year and type. Exchange them for clear ones but don't devalue the lot. nlp

I appreiciate everyone's comments. First I'm going to take some better photos to post. Then we can take a survey on how members feel I should go. I have been away from the hobby for a number of years and I must say this site and its members are indispensable! Thanks again.

Here are better images of one coin. so far more members are again cleaning/dipping the coin. The only factor that has me considering Cleaning/Dipping the coin is Eye Appeal. How would this coin grade as it looks now? I don't want to use the word "clean", I think we all feel that's a no-no. If I preserve the coin with a dip, do you think the grade would improve? Appreciate the feed back, thanks.

I consider that coin beautiful. Maybe MS 64 or MS 65. Cant tell for sure but it looks like the cartwheel effect of a BU coin is shining at mostly 2 O'clock and 9 o'clock on both obverse and reverse. It's definitely a no clean coin IMO now for sure. Nice pictures too! Good job!

Beautiful coin. I'm with some of the others. I wouldn't clean it.
