I ran across these nickel images, and I became curious at the plump balloon quality to the reverse lettering. The dots between USoA are particularly thick, although they do not appear distended. Five Cents and EPU are also cartoonish.

At first, I reasoned that it might be a combination of Die Deterioration and some poor metal flow along the edges. However, the S mint mark appears to be the correct size and thickness. DDD should affect everything equally, and metal flow should more severely affect devices closest to the rim.

Is this lettering thickness possibly the result of a flattened or distorted hub? I am open to explanations, I am still trying to learn the unusual things I see on Buffalo nickels, following the same path I took with Jefferson nickels. Thanks for any insights!
