Hello everyone,

I recently purchased what appears to be a 1779 George III gold guinea. The coin weighs 7.76g and measures 25mm in diameter. It seems to have a clipped edge, visible in the photos I've attached.

I'm seeking your expert opinions on the following:
• Does the coin look genuine/authentic?
• Any red flags in design, lettering, metal, or strike?
• Thoughts on the edge clipping — is this from circulation, damage, or possible tampering?
• If authentic, what would be a realistic value or grade?
• Is this coin worth submitting for grading (e.g., NGC or PCGS)?

I'm based in India,

Thanks in advance to all the community members for your feedback and help. &🙏;;;
I'll upload more pictures if needed!

Looks genuine to me. I think the edge damage is where a hanging loop has been removed. Many guineas were turned into jewelry in Victorian times.

@ak1, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that this coin is ex jewelry. The remaining solder counts as "damage" may remove some of the numismatic value. The edge shaving may have been done at the same time. Of course you still have the bullion value, which is great. Consider getting confirmation via a *non-destructive* test such as XRF that the gold percentage is correct.

I would concur; the damage is from a removed jewellery mount.

Coins with mount marks are considered "damaged"; the TPGs will not give them straight grades. you could submit the coin and get it back in a "details" slab, but for a coin that's essentially not worth much above bullion value, this is probably overkill. Especially given the cost and risk of international shipping to and from India.
