Hello all, I'm new to this community. Thank you for your time.
I have been collecting circulated coins all my life, and now that I'm retired, it's time to start going through them. I hope, with your help, I will learn more about errors and what is real and what is ebay fake.

This coin is pretty beat up, but I would like to figure out what would cause this mark. I thought coin strike, but it's so small and fits perfectly between the letters. Any ideas?

Thank You

@sha, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is mechanical damage--not a mint error. A die gouge would show up as extra metal (i.e. in relief rather than incuse).

To CCF! It appears to be a deep scratch. It's PMD.

Cool Cool, Thanks for responding. I thought it was interesting that there was no other surface disturbance like metal from the scratch, or copper under. I agree it's post mint damage, just wondering about the cause. I appreciate everyone's input.

With damage on coins - it can happen in a huge number of ways. Some you can tell what happened like if cut with shears but most damage you just can't pinpoint anything exact.
