I have this 1964 dime that has some very strange markings in the mint area that I need some help to identify. Looks like a worm coming out of the D, and a compass on the right side and a $ sign for the S.

I weighed the coin and the weight is right on for the year of the coin.

Please advise, thank you

My guess would be PMD = counter stamps. But considering it's a '64, it's still a silver dime.

Idle time in a machine shop added these counter stamps that have no added value. In other words, post mint damage. On a positive note it's still worth its silver value! Woohoo!

To CCF! It's PMD. It's silver, so it's still worth silver value.

Those would have to be some pretty small metal stamps .

Well, they make 'em. They also make laser engraving tools to ID small parts with serial numbers, lot numbers or mfg dates.

If you disagree then come up with your own ideas like "maybe Aliens did it?" (or something like that).

Ever see the engravers initials on the edge of a diamond? Well, they are there...
