Thanks, @andyg. There are not many square coins from India that look like that, and Malwa seemed a good guess but no match to any of the pictures was evident. A copy would not likely be illustrated anywhere, I suppose.

Post sultanate is the best I can offer.

Silver coinage in India was controlled, but copper less so - it seems that copper was traded by weight - it didn't really matter what was on it. However, having said that most issues can be traced, usually by knowing which part of India they are found, to an issuer.

A google of "Malwa coin copy" didn't yield much I have to say :(
