I know that the RCM is well regarded for its high quality process for making coins and is therefore commissioned to make coins for other countries. I had heard that it might even use the same planchet as a Canadian coin's. Is this true or just legend? And if it's true, is there some kind of publication that lists all the world coins out there? And more specifically, are there other coins using the toonie planchet? Thanks!

I am sure the RCM would not strike another nations coin on a toonie planchet but quite a few countries has a bimetalic coin very close to an original toonies weight and composition

Not a Canadian Loonie planchet.
Different core composition and weight.
The Caribbean core is bronze plated steel and weighs 7.2g
The Canadian core is brass plated aluminum bronze and weighs 6.92g

I would think that if it used the same planchet, a lower value coin could end up in Canadian vending machines. I assume that coins are still used to some extent there.

@oriole: Absolutely right, I should have thought of that, I even read how Korean 500 won coins were used as 500 yen coins in Japan's vending machines once upon a time, with a BIG difference in coin value..

And it's not like the RCM could say to a country "sure, we'll make the coin for you, but it has to be a 50 frazzit coin, because the exchange rate is 25 frazzits to a Canadian dollar.."

Well, 7-8 years ago, I used to use 50 cent pieces into the loonie slots in parking meters and meters in parking lots. It proved that the mint is better off using different sizes.

0.63 mm and 0.63 grams are nothing.
