I found this old 1846 Seated Liberty dollar coin. I don't know much about coins and was wondering what grade this coin would be and how much it would be worth. I also noticed that there is a misprint on the back of the coin where it says "United", it seems to be printed on there twice. Thanks....

, to the community, There appears to be several things going on with this coin. On the obverse several of the stars are misshaped and on the shield there looks like a letter J cut into it. On the reverse is the pronounced double strike of UNITED and I also see and extra S. Grade wise I would call it VF-20. Normally an 1846 in VF condition would be valued at $375. It doesn't appear to be a copy but I would have an expert check it out.

I am by no means an expert on Seated dollars. That said.... I did a little web searching and found that " All Seated dollars with the doubled United are counterfeits! And that the die gouge on the Li of Liberty on the shield is also a marker that the coin is counterfeit" Like I said I am no expert! Just passing along the information I found.

It looks like "a coin inside a coin" from the appearance of the rims. What's up with that? It also looks harshly cleaned with the reverse details AU but the obverse VF. I think it's some type of trick coin because of the rims/doubling.

Not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, but I really suspect the authenticity of this coin. The DOL on the reverse looks very strange on the typeset (font) and the reverse rimming seems all wrong, as previously stated. But I am no expert. SuperDave? Conder101? Thoughts?

I own one of these, too. It's a counterfeit.

Thanks for all your replies.... I really appreciate the feedback, even though it's a counterfeit, I'll still keep it because I never seen a counterfeit old dollar coin before..... but why would they take the trouble in making a counterfeit anyways?

A real one would be worth a couple hundred bucks! Get the picture?

As Superdave said it is a counterfeit and a well known one. That doubled reverse die showed up several years ago and has been combined with many different dated obv dies. The doubling happened when they created that die in China. It does not exist on any genuine US Seated silver dollar. You would think that once they realized they had such a major error on the die they wouldn't use it but they did. Possibly they thought they could sell the pieces for higher prices as error coins.
