Hats off to the variety educators here on CCF. A year ago, I wouldn't have even known that mule clashes even existed. Now I'm in the habit of automatically checking coins that drift past in my ebay feed. I noticed this one and decided to make an offer. How often are you really going to get the chance to own such an unusual coin? Picked, a heavily circulated example of a Snow-8 mule die clash between a 1857 Flying Eagle cent reverse die and a 1857 Seated Liberty quarter reverse die. On first inspection, that all looked like stray circulation marks to me, but I think that you are right @brand. Well done!

Thanks, guys. =) Noticing it was just a happy opportunity, the same as the '35 Buffalo nickel DDR that I found recently. It's actually the first Flying Eagle cent that I've ever owned. I have to say, after doing some reading about Snow numbers and all the die markers to seek, they do seem like an interesting denomination to variety hunt. Alas, FEC are also a bit pricey for my coin budget.

Tried to capture the clash details under magnification with mixed results. Due to the curvy nature of the clash, it's hard to get the light to create a shadow when crossing the whole edge.

Nice pickup. Rick Show's book states that only 50 in all grades are known. I checked PCGS and they have certified 73 Snow 8 coins. So I think since Snow wrote his book more examples have been found. I hope to find one some day like you did.

NGC also lists around 75. So the population is probably considerably higher now that people know what to look for.
