In the 1960's I collected world coins and owned the book A Catalog of Modern World Coins by R. S. Yeoman, seventh edition, published in 1967. There was a island country in the book named Mauritius and from a coin dealer's foreign coin "junk bin" I acquired a Mauritius 20 cent coin dated 1886.  1. Mauritius 20 Cents 1886 Silver, 18.0 mm, 2.33 gm Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean. It had been a British possession for a long time and is now independent.  1. Mauritius 1 Cent 1965 Bronze, 17.0 mm, 1.94 gm  2. Mauritius 2 Cents 1969 Bronze, 23.0 mm, 3.87 gm  3. Mauritius 5 Cents 1967 Bronze, 28.0 mm, 9.87 gm  4. Mauritius 10 Cents 1966 Copper-nickel, 24.0 mm, 5.12 gm  5. Mauritius Quarter Rupee 1965 Copper-nickel, 19.0 mm, 2.91 gm  6. Mauritius Half Rupee 1965 Copper-nickel, 23.0 mm, 5.74 gm  7. Mauritius Rupee 1956 Copper-nickel, 30.0 mm, 11.64 gm Another old coin from Mauritius:  1. Mauritius Quarter Rupee 1950 Copper-nickel, 19.0 mm, 2.92 gm

I only know of Mauritius from stamp collecting when I was a kid. Apparently the rare 1847 issues were the first stamps issued outside of Great Britain and are still extremely rare and valuable. Interesting how you fell into collecting these. Made me think of my childhood. Great looking coins you have gathered here.

Some very beautiful coins there Willieboyd2.  As a world coin collector, I do have a few coins from Mauritius. I suppose I should throw my 2 cents worth in.

Thanks for posting these, willieboyd2!  I went on a vacation to Mauritius a few years ago, and by then the only one of the coins you've shown that was still in circulation was the half rupee. The 1 and 2 cents had gone, the 5c reduced in size and the 10c and quarter-rupee had been retired in favour of a revived 20 cents. The 1 Rupee has also been reduced in size and there were 5 Rupee coins. The half-rupee may have the last Kruger Grey reverse design in regular use today:

Two more Mauritius coins: I just had to get one of these:  Mauritius 10 Rupees 1971 - Independence and Dodo bird Copper-nickel, 35.0 mm, 17.44 gm Probably the best reverse design:  Mauritius Half Rupee 1951 - Barasingha or swamp deer Copper-nickel, 23.6 mm, 5.82 gm
