My introduction to German Commemoratives apparently, I found this yesterday at a local store I hadn't been to before and couldn't leave it!

I also received another 1976-D bicentennial die clash in the change... it was a very strange day of numismatic coincidences.

That's a really cool 5 Mark, MintedNotPrinted! I would not have been able to leave it there either.

VERY interesting German coin. You sent me searching for an explanation of the creature on the German coin.

Wikipedia:
This is from the 1699 Simplicius Simplicissimus by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen.
The creature has also been interpreted as representing the true author himself (or his narrative work), with the book and the sword serving as mundane objects straightforwardly defining his identity, while the additional parts such as the wings (alluding to air) and the fins and fishtail (water) are allusive hints. This man has enacted many roles (indicated by the masks scattered on the floor), but presently is donning the mask of the "satirical actor" in order to perform the task of explaining the world to his audience while pointing-gesturing his book. The creature exists as a whole though made up of odd disparate parts,

Thanks everyone!

Earle42, I went on a similar search, fascinating history and truly horrific to imagine! Conscription by kidnapping at the age of 10. At least he survived and later found his outlet writing, incredible.
