Cent coins prior to 1982 are not plated, they are full copper.

Edit to add: (and lets add that the 1943 cent was a zinc plated steel cent)

This looks like a bad stain/corrosion, or possibly something on the surface.

1962 cents were not plated. It's anybody's guess what caused the discoloration, perhaps the bag was stored in a damp environment at some point in the last 60+ years.

It's some kind of stain. Lincoln cents before 1982 were not plated.

Except I think there was at least one year prior to 1982 plated with zinc, but had nothing to do with this year "1962". Thanks, Doug.

yeah, I know that 1943 don't count, but didn't want to convolute the topic too much - so my mind stopped at the OPs year coin

Besides, the 1943 and 1982ff plating is different.

In 1943, the sheets of steel were zinc plate, THEN the blanks were stamped out - the edges are raw steel.

Current cents are stamped out of zinc sheets and then plated, so the edges are plated.

It's the only one like this in the bag. Going in a 2x2 just because it's strange. Thanks for the replies.
