Hi, stumbled upon this in a roll. I've been searching around on here and online in general to nail down if this is a plating error or PMD. I've seen people pretty split between saying a mint error vs damage. I've also seen a few graded slabs with coins very similar to mine that have listed this as partial copper plating, which also seems to be a fairly common occurrence with these zinc cents. Wondering if there's any particular indicators if it's an error or damage? Would love input. Thanks!

Interesting find. I'll sit out on this one for now. This one is out of my wheelhouse, so I'll let the other members help you.

Well it could be a few things but partial plating I don't think is one of them on this example

"Solid State Diffusion" is when the zinc migrates to the surface of the coin.

"Heat" causing toning.

"Wear"

Take your pick.

@alm, it seems to me that you should always default to the simplest, most straight-forward explanation. So unless this cent came directly from sealed mint packaging, I would just assume that the answer is damage.

@spence I'm leaning towards damage since I see specs of copper under the scope in the lighter areas. More just a curiosity of mine to see what type of info there is out there (as opposed to finding a unicorn lol)

@Dearborn agree ha definitely don't think this is anything special. More just to satisfy my curiosities and hunger for knowledge
