I'm not too familiar with the Massachusetts copper coins either, but there are a few 1788 varieties with the tail feathers above the bar. J and K for sure and there may be others. I'd say it's a 1788.

Looking at the date, the last number is an 8, not a 7
so it would be a 1788

So @lcutler you are correct and the reverses that correspond to the shorter tail feathers are H-K, and M. It's clearly a 12 Obverse. I was getting frustrated because H-K did not overlay to my satisfaction and L was back to long feathers. However it appears that they then went back to shorter feathers for M. This appears to match up best to a 12-M R.4. So that's the best I could do with this. I'm posting the images of a 12-M that I used which match up the best of any combinations of about 20 coins at Heritage. Thanks for your input.

Just to clarify any confusion the OP has changed the
heading, that's why Icutler and my answers do not
correspond to the present heading. The original heading
asked if it was a 1877 or 1878.

True, at this point pretty clear it is a 1788 so the title now reflects the current status of the thread.

Just as an aside though yes I agree it looks like an 8, but I've seen coins in this condition before where the number may have been damaged and ends up looking like something it isn't. So I wanted more confirmation based on the coin itself that it was in fact a 1788 and not assume that just cause it "looks" like an 8 that it actually is.

Thanks @Dearborn. Yeah it's obvious now it's an 8. I got thrown off by seeing only long feathers on other 88s on ebay and only short feathers on 87s. Found it at an estate liquidation sale.
