PCGS - This Liberty Cap Cent lowball recently passed through our grading room. While these cents are rare to find in high-grade, this piece goes the opposite route - earning a seldom-seen PCGS PO01BN. Looking at just the PCGS TrueViews, are you able to decipher the date? Check out Certified PO-01 Coins on ebay. I'm aware the label is wrong.

I can barely make out 17 on the coin. It's definitely a poor 1, though. I wonder what it's worth, considering a recent trend of some coins with the lowest grade going for a surprising bit of money.

If I sent that in, I'd get it back in a body bag with environmental damage and scratches noted.

Looks like a metal detecting find, and the label is wrong.

I can't make out the date either. I wonder if the 1973 date was meant to be 1793? A 1793 in any condition is worth a lot. Hard to believe this was a straight grade. I normally regard PCGS in high regard, but the mistakes on this coins slab don't help their reputation.

That's a slabbing disaster. Where's the quality control?

The date on the slab is wrong. I don't know why it graded straight. You'd think it would have gotten the details grade. I can't really see the date on it.

The ONLY item in this post that should get a POOR grade is none other than PCGS. What a joke. CAC & ANACS are the only TPGs worth consideration anymore. NGC? Ya, NO.

I appreciate all the lovely coins you bring to us, but suggest it's bad form to publish this tread which highlights PCGS lack of quality control on the slab.

I guess that begs the question as to whether there is any 'quality' to 'control'. Interesting tho - I'm guessing someone from PCGS must be monitoring posts like this. Look what came in email today!!!

I remember when ANACS started grading coins and thought it was a great idea. When it caught on and a bunch of big-money dealers got together and started PCGS 14 years later I believed at the time it was just a money grab by those dealers and attempt to have some control and advantage over the certification process. Over time I think this has proven to be correct. If you aren't a power insider with PCGS that coin comes back in a body bag, but whoever submitted that got a straight grade. The marketing effort behind PCGS essentially pushed ANACS aside. I've owned hundreds of coins graded by all 3 majors and have always thought that ANACS-graded coins were very solidly graded without bias for or against whoever submits it. I like that about them and would never buy a PCGS coin. I will buy NGC coins because they have such nice holders, but for grading value I favor ANACS. The carelessness of them to make a label error on a coin of that caliber is a joke. ANACS was a real honest effort by the coin collecting community in the 70's to get some standardization in grading which the hobby really needs to some extent.

Yeah I noticed that right away too (but only because the OP had pulled the attention to the date) I have a subscription with PCGS that I'm canceling - I just don't use them much and seeing how this coin got graded in just another nail in the coffin for them.
