Not much. This auction is in violation of ebay's Terms of Service which require "Copy" or "Reproduction" to be in both the title and description. When I get done here, I'll send in a report to ebay.

Hi guys,
I didn't see this when I replied to your other post on this. I agree that ideally it should be labelled copy. It's hard for me to get too worked up about this one, as the title and description both prominently state "Proof Set Tribute" Even for the unsophisticated, it seems pretty clear. From the bidding, it appears that no one was bidding thinking that these were anything other than copy coins. Perhaps a gentle email to the seller asking them to follow the sales guidelines would do the trick- there doesn't seem to be an intent to mislead. Now, having said that I know nothing of the seller, so if they have a different history I stand corrected.

Don, I realize it says "tribute" but I still think some folks may feel this has something to do with the U.S. Mint. Mike

I always have a problem with deceptive marketing. I don't like it and will never condone it.

Having said that there are times when I feel the buyer has to accept responsibility for their own actions. If someone gets burned by such a sale and then does nothing about it, so sad, your dad..!

At some point just complaining to your best friend don't get it done. We can't pass laws against everything that can possibly hurt us or deceive us. If so we would have rubber sidewalks so when we fell we would hurt ourselves.

This ad is one of the cases. I speak english. I know what "Tribute" means. If I were to buy this set for any other reason then shame on me.

Although I posted this in the other thread, I'll post here also for clarification.

This seller has never sold coins before (that I could find). I sent a helpful email to the seller and he ended the auction. It does not appear that there was an intent to deceive on this one - just an honest mistake.

Once again, I'd like to point out how important it is to consider the possibility of honest mistakes in auctions. I have made a few myself. For many sellers, a friendly email will correct the problem. Reading the seller's feedback and looking at the majority of what they sell can go a long way to pointing out the difference between honest mistakes and blatant scamming.

Hi All,
Thanks for the feedback on both of the posts about this set of Tribute coins. I am new to ebay and seem to read endless comments in other forums and media about scams on ebay. If I run into something that seems out of order I will take the steps suggested before making a "Witch Hunt" type of posting that it seems I did here. I am going to e-mail the seller with an explanation and apology. My intent was to help, not harm. Mike
Here's acopy of the e-mail I sent...Dear hoosierantiques,
I am one of the people that complained about an auction you had for a 1936 Tribute set of coins. I posted this complaint on a Coin Forum without looking into the matter and was quite embarrassed when our forum administrator explained your actions and innocence in the manner it was posted. I am new to ebay and have read about scams and thought this one was. I will not jump the gun again and have posted an apology on the forum I raised the complaint on. I hope this caused you no harm, Sincerly, RMKardes

You don't need to e-mail the seller and apologize--you did what was right---his auction was bad and it was good to have it taken off e-bay.

Although it doesn't seem like it, I still believe that most people try to be honest. That doesn't always mean that they educate themselves on what they're selling, but once you've looked at enough auctions, it becomes much easier to spot the honest mistakes as opposed to intentional misrepresentation. Like everything else, it takes experience. I still believe that a seller has a responsibility to learn about what he/she sells. If other sellers believed that, situations like the OP would happen a lot less frequently.
