Hello. Just wondering if there are many Barber collectors out there. Someone told me there are not really many people wanting them. I am thinking about trying a set of the dimes, quarters, halves. Anyone have any advice? Thanks, Jordan Edited by jdheyne 04/14/2006 4:40 pm

I have maybe a dozen. I really like them. The oldest coin I ever found in circulation was a Barber quarter.

I don't collect them. except the ones I need for my type set. But I have been reading in Coin World and other magazines that Barber are becoming more popular and they are climbing in value.

Barber coins figure prominently into my hoard of low-grade silver; they are affordable and readily available. The design, however, gets rather ugly when the coins are heavily worn; in my opinion, the Liberty Seated coins wear better. It is an attractive design in higher grades, and some years ago I bought an uncirculated Barber quarter just so that I would have a nice example. Collecting a full date/mint mark set would be difficult; there are many key and semi-key dates that are rather expensive and getting costlier. The 1894S dime, of course, is out of reach unless you are a multimillionaire. You might start by buying mixed rolls of low-grade coins just to familiarize yourself with them; there are enough common dates that these coins are usually well-mixed. Heather

Barbers of any denomination have always been my favorite !
As with assembling any sets of U.S. coins by date and mintmark, try to obtain the key dates first if possible; they are almost always the most sought-after and rise in value more quickly than the other more "common" coins. You will be spending less money this way by the time the set is completed. 8-)

I have a decent little dime start, about 150, mostly g-vg, a semi-key or two... some higher grade (nothing higher than XF)... but yeah, the 94 S like you said, it will be a b...bear. Maybe I can get lucky and find it in when I buy these as scrap. The quarters and halves, I do not have as many, but still a nice start.
So I don't know. I might just move the barbers that I have and make a buck here and there... Fun game.

I think it was Jordon, jdheyne) who ask if anyone has advice- Well for what it is worth from this old timer- In the now place and time- I would suggest to start with the Best barbers you can find- Do your own Barber half dollar type set- or Barber quarter set- (you will end up with odd dates and not in series) to collect in series high grade now is impossible even if you are a millionaire. But as someone here said, these barbers are not attractive when they are really worn- On the other hand, they are quite beautiful such as the one I just listed -See my link above- Or another way to get your Barbers looking special, is to Go for a Half Dollar Type set. Start with the Seated Lib, Turban Head, then Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin and Kennedy- When you get six of these in High Grade (affordable) in a capitol plastic holder, they are beautiful. This is another approach- but a systematic approach- and one that can be veyr satisfying. You can use this approach with Cent, nickels, Dimes, quarters halves and dollars- And in this day and age, is very likely the best approach to building a nice collection- and not just a bunch of accumulations. Also you have variety in this method- You know what they say, Variety is the spice of life- Well, perhaps in some things- and I believe coins is one of them. Sound Good!!! and then you are in the company of the best who enjoy the Hobby of Kings!! Dewey

TKC!
TKC, here is a little tip- as you said, it was hard to find barbers in kuwait- Try going to GOOGLE and click on More- then go in to the ALERT- you can tell GoOGLE to alert you when say Barber halves show up on EBAY- or Barber quarters- Now another tip is this- There is still a substantial amount of barbers lying hidden in curio shops in the Philippines. If you can find someone say A sevice man to communicate with that is stationed there- or a Navy person, you have a good chance of getting into some nice barbers. Sounds farfetched/ I know a fellow who did a complete set of Barber dimes except for the 1894S of course- and he has been able to put together a complete set of barber halves- But he was in the military and stationed there for a couple of years. -But try the Google searfch-alert and I am betting you will end up with a few nice barbers. -from Dewey knight #28

I love Barbers! Great classic design. I have multiple Unc. examples of all denominations. I have stashed a mix of circs as well and keep my eyes peeled for scarcer dates and mintmarks. I think they are great "sleeper" coins that are just coming into their own. Mike
