Curious as to your opinions regarding the benefits of registering type sets. Do you think it really adds any value should you sell it, or is it merely a way to 'see your name in lights' so to speak? I recently acquired a complete US Gold 12-coin Type Set so interested in what collectors think. Thanks----DB

I dont really think it adds any value to the coins, it is more or less for competition and for people that doesn't keep their coins at home, they can upload pictures of their coins on the registry and they can look at them without having to go to the safe deposit box and pulling them out to see them. I do "compete" in one of the registries and its just basically to get a little recognition for the collection I have aquired (even though I will probably never be in the top 50 on a few I am competing in, but have the #1 set in one of them) so its basically as you said "your name in lights" for alot of people and for a few its a way to catagorize and be able to see the coins as I said before.

It is strictly ego and for saying "my dog is better than your dog". With that said, I have the 13th rated Lincoln Memorial proof set with varieties. See the listing here:

http://www.pcgs.com/new_set_registr...0&alltime=no

Why did I do it? I wanted to see how my set stood up against others. After I registered, my "ego side" wanted a higher listing. I was surprised to see I was initially #26. I slowly moved up and searched and bought "upgrades" to satisfy this "ego thrist".

Am I proud that I have the 13th rated set? Yes and No. First of all, I am listed as #13 and to move up I really need to find and save for a 1990 "No S" proof Lincoln. That will cost me some serious money. But during my search, I acquired a beautiful small date 1960 Lincoln set in a proof set in original packaging.

When I got home, I looked at it more closely and I thought it was a SD over LD or a LD over SD. My local dealer (who I didn't buy this from) confirmed to me he thought it was Small Date over Large Date. Now this is a blazing red specimen and I submitted it to PCGS (where my registry set is) and it came back PR68RD SD/LD!!

That $65 purchase now has a coin worth thousands because the PCGS population reports has this 1960 PR68RD SD over LD coin as 7/0!!!

So...I'll admit it. I wanted to see how my set measured up or down against others and I am pretty proud of what I have. It keeps my ego fueled...I'll admit it! Have I paid more for some of these coins over those that were "probably" the same grade raw? More likely than none, yes...but that is my darn ego pushing and driving my search for the best of the best...within my budget!
