Similar post to Brandmeister, very coincidentally...

I found this unexpectedly today at an antique store I hadn't been to before. It's the first Flying Eagle under $20 I've seen in person with a date and no hole, so it left with me! I still plan on getting a nicer example soon...

Based on where the A is pointing and the spacing between letters, I believe it's the small letters variety, but would greatly appreciate opinions.

Thanks for looking.

I believe you are correct. The spacing between the E and R tops is comparatively wide. I am clearly no expert on this variety, though.

Small letters - Gap. Large letters - touching.

EDIT: The Small Letter version is slightly less common but there isn't a price difference untill you get into the higher grades.

Brandmeister, Marve65, thanks both!

Marve65, unfortunately, the lower portion of those letters are indistinguishable. I have to rely on denticles & spacing.

Maybe this is a dumb question. Are the denticles a part of the hub that includes the eagle and the words USoA? i.e. that the position of the lettering to the denticles is always the same across all dies?

I know the date numbers are hammered separately, of course.

Not a dumb question. Before 1836 the denticules were not part of the hub, after 1836 they were.
