Hello everyone, I purchased this First Meris Tetradrachm in a 14k gold bezel with the hope of removing it someday. With gold at an all-time high, I figured now would be a good time. Does anyone have experience with doing this? I don't believe it's soldered onto the coin, but I'm not sure. It looks as though the gold pins were heated and then molded around the coin.

You would need a steady hand to hold the bezel in a vise and unbend the pins without scratching the coin any more. It is probably scratched a bit since the pins are touching the coin. Or perhaps you can snip the pins with a fine cutter and the coin would come loose. That's what I would try from the look of it. There might be enough room to use a fine bladed jeweler's saw to cut around the edges.

With the mount being 14k it will bend easily. Just get some fine nosed pliers and bend the pins out. Something I have done many times.
If your worried about scratching the coin put cotton wool on the jaws of the pliers. Good luck with it whatever you decide

Thanks for the replies. Thinking of just using cutting pliers. Should be easy enough. Will post the results.

I got the coin out, but there are a few marks where the pins were. Looking back, I'm pretty sure a jeweler would've done it for free since I'm trading the bezel in for scrap anyway. All they'd have to do is heat up the pins and pop the coin out. Of course, I thought of that after the fact. Lesson learned—always check with a jeweler first!

In time the scratches will tone up and blend in better, but they will still be there and for sure hurt the value of coin.

Thanks, but I think the jeweler would've done the job with little or no damage.

I have to say, it looks better than expected and It could have been much worse.

Do not beat yourself up. A jeweler doing a "free for scrap" job might have been even less careful.
