I am having a hard time interpreting Flying Eagle cent auction prices. When I look at PCGS results, it seems that rare varieties sell for way less than vanilla FEC in identical grades. How does that make any sense?

I know that the sales grid is very incomplete, but even so, the data points seem contrarian.

Compare the MS64 prices for standard 1857 FEC against FS-101 thru 105. In all cases, the recorded auction prices are considerably lower for the DDO varieties than the vanilla cent.

Just off the top of my head I would say the only thing rarer than Flying Eagle cent varieties are Flying Eagle cent variety collectors. The comparisons are CAC graded with non CAC grade pieces and in many cases years apart. Sure there is an outlier here and there even among the CAC pieces. Even among similar graded coins the swing can be substantial. Eye appeal plays an important role as well as strike.

Does the green bean really change the price that much?

The data is sparse, that's definitely an obstacle. I also have to agree that eye appeal varies trmendously. There are some real dogs in MS60-63 holders.

Yes. For example: Stacks/Bowers sold a PCGS 1867 AU55 CAC Liberty Seated dollar a few days ago for $12,600. ( pop 4 )
Previous to this sale Gerry Fortin auctioned off a PCGS AU 50 CAC for $ 6,500 in Dec 2021. The current PCGS price guide
for a 1867 AU55 is $4250 and $3250 for a AU50. Even the CAC price guides are out of date. Of course CAC's influence on
different series will vary. In this case CAC is known to be very strict with the Liberty Seated series and the prices realized
confirms this. There is a lot of data out there if you do your due diligence. Good luck.
