CoinHI Pillar of the Community United States 2731 Posts	Posted 11/10/2025 11:00 am I recently looked through a tube of 1955 S cents and nearly half of them showed BIE breaks of some sort. One of those BIE's is 1955S-002 which has a distinctive die crack extending just above and behind the eyebrow. I noticed one of the coins had that die crack without the BIE but you can see the outline cracks of the pre-BIE on E and maybe on B. The listing says that 002A has the BIE without the cracked skull but that is not possible and likely the crack disappeared through circulation wear on that listed coin. It is a light crack. I like the comparison to the 2 coins of the BIE area, it sure looks like the die crack is the same as the outline of the BIE - so we call it a "Pre-BIE" ? Collecting since 1972. I love finding progressions, and am always looking for Pre-BIEs, especially for 1955-S, my favorite year for Lincoln Cents. I agree, your example with Pre-BIE and also exhibiting the distinctive die crack indicates an issue with the CoC listing. JC should look back at the coin used for 002A photos and double check for die crack. It looks like that coin might be circulated and the crack may have been worn or something. I'll have to look at my examples, but your photos seem definitive that even in the Pre-BIE stage the crack was present.
