With the cent disappearing despite the zinc lobby, maybe the paper dollar can be the next to go despite the paper lobby. We've had plenty of dollars, circulating and not: Ike, SBA, Sacagawea, Presidents, Innovations, American Eagles. But what do you think would make for a good design for a dollar coin that would be very heavily used in commerce if the paper bills were withdrawn? Just some thoughts to kick it off: Obverse: Human liberty symbol (female). Obverse legends: E Pluribus Unum, date, mint mark. No designer initials. Reverse: Changing annually, different varieties of American trees (yes, I like the Connecticut State Quarter). Reverse legends: United States of America, One Dollar. Incuse on rim: Nothing, don't be silly. Ridges are fine. So I've sacrificed two legends, "Liberty" because the image speaks for itself, and "IGWT." Your turn. EDIT: Assume that appropriate Congressional legislation would be passed for your design. Edited by scott7721

The Native American dollar designs are just fine. Just kill the paper and let the Mint pull the NIFC tag from them.  |

"Ridges are fine" ... unless you're visually impaired. The smooth edge helps distinguish the dollar coin from the similarly-sized quarter.

Get rid of the nickel. Get rid of the half. Get rid of the paper $1. Release the billions of $1 coins in storage.

So, yes, they can come up with a new permanent one. No reason to change the obverse unless they Return to Liberty on all circulating US coins.  |

Honestly just reuse the 1977 Gasparro design. It would make a beautiful coin, and it's an absolute travesty of numismatic history that this design never went into circulation.

These likely will not be popular ideas here, but:  Eliminate the five cent and fifty cent coins. Melt and recycle the massive unreleased stock of one cent, five cent, fifty cent, and dollar coins. Allow existing coins to circulate until deposited in a bank, and withdraw them from circulation when deposited. Eliminate paper currency, since it is too easily counterfeited. Give a sunset date by which it must be redeemed or be de-monetized. Continue to mint the existing CNC clad ten cent and twenty-five cent coins. It might be nice to settle on permanent new designs that feature something less political, like nature. Design and release a plastic dollar coin with an internal design (also featuring something like nature) and an embedded chip that can verify audibly the denomination and authenticity to assist persons with visual disabilities. Design and issue a five-layer clad five dollar coin with a unique shape and weight above the current fifty-cent coin, having a unique electrical signature that can trigger audible verification of authenticity and denomination. The design should include a Brailled denomination. Design and issue a seven-layer (including inlay or toplay clad layers) clad twenty-five dollar coin with a unique shape and weight at least equal to the standard silver dollar, also having a unique electrical signature that can trigger audible verification of authenticity and denomination. The design should also include a Brailled denomination. Require that vendors who accept the coins must also allow credit/debit/renewable cash card payments. |

the Native American dollar is just fine and should be released for circulation (would save me from buying the P and D coins from ebay for my Dansco album. BUT, put the date and mint back on the fields somewhere.. |

Let the mint reclaim All the copper 1 cent coins, melt them down and create one massive (huge, gigantic) cent and install it on the Philly Mint's building and a monument to what they created long ago
Then reclaim all the zinc coins, melt them down, then create a zinc slurry to paint the San Francisco/Oakland Bay bridge with.

Not many want to carry around pocket change anymore. It's been proven over and over no matter what or how you make a dollar coin nobody will accept it and use it as everyday currency.

Keep the same composition and size, kill the $1 bill and release the billions in Federal Reserve storage. Design wise, let the Mint go full RCM on the quarter and dollars. Base metal coins anyway. As long as they spend I'm ok. |
