1835 was the first and only year when the United States declared its national debt to be zero under Andrew Jackson on January 8. Until and thereafter we have always been a debtor nation. 22 days after the announcement, on January 30, an unemployed house painter named Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate Jackson but failed when both his pistols misfired. Jackson then charged Lawrence and beat him with a cane.

This one came from the same seller as the 1831 25c SmLtrs. Examined it carefully and this one did not have the same hairlines and is a keeper. I agree that this one looks to be VF35, but may squeak into XF and is on the attractive side of the grade. Further thoughts? Thanks!
