How would you grade this one? In hand, at just the right angle, this coin can be quite colorful with blues, tans, and purples. At other angles it looks like it has the "skin" of a centuries old coin.

Not too familiar with these, but I'll guess VF, based on the circulation wear. Take my comment with a grain of salt. I'm sure other members can grade it better then me.

That is a beautiful 300 year old coin.

Lightly circulated so maybe XF range?

I'll say AU-MS. Is it that color in hand?

That's a pretty nice grade for that coin. I was way off.

My favorite part of this design is the globe--I see MS graded examples with missing globe details, so I am glad that this one has a solid strike, at least where the globes are concerned. I definitely see the wear, though, and it does look like an AU coin to me.

I have another pillar 8 reales coin in an MS holder--it is missing so many details from a weak strike, but again, I chose one with good details on the globe.

Good deal, Adam! Your coin is exceptionally well-struck, and on a nice planchet. It's a coin any collector would be happy to have.

Thanks everyone! I am still looking for a nice MS Pillar 8 Reales coin with full globe details from the 1730s or 1740s. This is a great one to tide me over until I find my "diamond in the rough."
