Bought this coin awhile back because I wanted a o/s Morgan. When I purchased it, I wasn't aware that it seems to be decently scarce in higher grades and most are well circulated. I have had 2 people ask if I wanted to sell it including a local coin shop which suprised me, especially because I believe it's cleaned. It is VAM 5. Where you got her?    Edited by Odee13

Odee13, I haven't closely checked, but are there different varieties on these 1882 O/S Morgan? This picture I have posted doesn't look anything like yours, O over S... They say the "S" inside the "O" should be a "Flat Cross Bar", which yours definitely isn't.. BTW: I'll rate your Morgan: AU-Details

I have an 1882 O/S Morgan that could be the twin of the coin you presented. Just received back from PCGS where it received an AU Det / Cleaned designation. While I suspected an old cleaning, it most certainly looked uncirculated to me. The grading companies are so focused on market grading that you can't say for sure what they would assign from coin to coin. They often disregard or are unfamiliar with subtle differences in strike from the various mints and eras, especially on Morgan dollars and Buffalo nickels. Quote:

I just typed a whole novel and then my phone changed websites. Annoying. So I will start over taking bumps comment into consideration - but first bump sorry for the non expected grade at least you have slabbed confirmation on VAM, I saw an au detailed cleaned go for over $200 just because the o/s demand. My question is for the grades coming in at low to mid au, what makes you go with that? From my grade analysis I have this at ms60 - reasons being - in my experience (and my other 82 o's I have) the 82 o and good amount of New Orleans mint coins are weakly struck. I feel like this coin is no exception but minimally a little better strike. The obverse shows signs of Wear on hair and blossom but hair above ear has more detail then a lot of graded 62 & 63 which goes back to my point of weak/mushy strike, this is same sentiment for reverse breast feathers. The cheek scratches to me are fine and wouldn't deter a low ms grade, I do see signs of wear in regards to no longer smooth surfaces all around which to me would be the biggest pull down to show it's circulated, also loss of luster but to me that points to a dip as there are halos around devices. I'm not arguing/defending this coin as I bought it for the variety and thought it was cleaned from the get go and I appreciate the comments they help me determine condition moving forward. I just want to make sure I'm not incorrectly looking at coins in terms of grading going back to my point that I see plenty of 82 o's graded in 62/63 that seem to look worse. Edited by Odee13

One reason why I don't think it's unc is that there seems to be luster missing in the obverse. Particularly in the face of Liberty and the fields. Note the bright luster around the stars on the left side and the contrasting dull color in the fields.

I agree with that Numis, I mentioned that in my previous comment that luster was missing, I said that could also be from a dip based on the halos around the devices and being dipped doesn't necessarily mean circulated.
