$50. #3 of 35 Morgans purchased recently. Usually don't find first year Morgans in the bargain box but found several in this case. This one ilooks semi-prooflike in hand. Thoughts? Thanks!

MS-61. I like your first one more than this.

IGE, why do you grade this lower? It seems to have far fewer hits than the other 78S.

Having a harder time getting a read on the obverse of this one. Photo is a little dark, but maybe that is the reflectiveness of it causing that? I am at a 62 or 63

I had a hard time photographing this one. It did not show the normal cartwheel but looked half black and half white and the halves moved around as I moved the light source. It isn't quite proof-like but semi in my opinion. The surfaces are really nice and mark-free.

NS, the obverse has so many small scuffs, scrapes and hits it almost looks circulated. But the reverse is no doubt MS. Not one I would ever pay MS-62 or better money for.

Unfortunately, I think that the way grading works, this one is a higher grading unc coin. I like the luster of the other one (78S #7) much better, but if both are unc, this one has fewer hits and thus should receive a higher grade. Based on eye appeal, the difference can of course be adjusted by price as you say. You can always compare spectacular lower graded coins with ugly higher graded coins and I usually walk away purchasing the better looking, lower grade coin for less money. That's one of the joys of coin collecting.

I agree with this being SPL. A lot of what look like scratches on this coin are part of the aggressive die polishing seen on some of the 1878-S VAMs, especially the generally N-S marks on the obverse. (For example, see VAM 41.) Most of what is in the field west of Liberty's face are from the Mint's handiwork. Remember, this year has coins with acid treated dies, re-engraved dies, weird gouges all over the place, several "funky feather" varieties, denticles randomly in the design, and on and on.

There are some prominent scratches on the cheek, jawbone, lower ear lobe, and higher points of the cap, but none of them are deep gouges. There is a series of light scratches just west of the eye. The reverse is better. On balance, I think this one is a solid MS-62. and could make MS-63.
