This is a NGC original bag fragment series BU designated 81 s I have. I believe BU graded coins are typically just that BU but usually have some noticeable scratch or are noticeably dipped or something that would bring the grade down to low MS so instead of a numeric grade they give it BU classification and cost is a bit cheaper. Anyway I feel like this is a higher MS coin and find it interesting it was put in this slab. Maybe I'm wrong on my whole thoughts on BU coins and maybe it's normal for coins like this to have BU grade or maybe this coin isn't as nice as I think?

What would you grade this at?

I wouldn't buy that for 65 money - but I would at 64.

Cheek looks nice, but a fair number of bag marks in the fields. I'd say MS-64.

Besides the 1921 Morgan...the 1881-S has to be the most prostituted...I mean slabbed Morgan out there.
I can only imagine the grader saying...oh, another 81-s.
They were struck very well (compliments to the SFO branch).
Because there are so many out there to satisfy collector wants/needs they are intensely scrutinized.
The obverse fields look very nice relative to the pop out there...but there's still the disturbances by M and Star of UNUM.
She has taken a couple of hits...light as they may be on her cheek near her mouth and her neck near her throat as well as the lower neck.
The reverse has disturbances below STATES and above IGWT. Above the Eagles head bag marks...looks like slashes on both wings and the big ding right in the middle of the chest.
Sorry but I'm not trying to beat you up...I've sent in at least 10 81-S's and each time I got them back...I kept looking at them like a guy with his mouth showing his front teeth like I needed new glasses...WHAT?
It's the population...
MS-63 Monday - MS-64 Friday
Still a beauty because of the obverse fields.

Thanks smat. I thought that as well in regards to there is so many ms 81s it must have to do with that, 81 s must gotta be the most Morgan's released in 50's and 60's - I currently have 5. not beating me up at all. I was think it looks 65 even with the reverse looking messy, it looks better then a lot of the 65s on PCGS.

Thanks for the breakdown.

ps - you are not wrong about her being a lady of the night (prostituted out)

I'll say MS-64 for the grade. It's a pretty nice Morgan dollar.
