Hello... I'm still getting back into this hobby and had this unfortunate experience with USPS shipping :( Last week I bought this NGC graded 1955 DDO Lincoln Cent in AU-55 on ebay for $2600 + $35 shipping. Unfortunately when it arrived, there was a big burn spot on the packaging envelope and I could tell something bad had happened to it. After opening it... indeed a corner of the NGC case has been "filed" or burned off. It appears like it got stuck in some sort of automated sorter and it burned through the packaging and onto the case. The coin itself is fine and awesome. It took me a while to find one I like this much without it being too over priced. The seller has been awesome and said I could return the item through ebay as damaged. But, I really do like the coin. My options are: 1) Return it through ebay and buy another, I'm not sure when I'll be able to find a coin I like this much for $2600 though... I don't see one listed currently or any other auction site. 2) File a claim with USPS, it was insured through USPS for up to $100. Then ship this to NGC for a Reholder Service... I have no clue what that entails though as I've never had a coin of mine graded. I also don't know what kind of risk there is of it coming back in a different grade. I'm not sure what USPS will cover... most of the cost of the reholder is the shipping. 3) File a claim with USPS and just keep the coin as is... that corner is probably going to bug me though I'm curious to get other more experienced collectors thoughts on what they would do in this situation. Thanks!! this corner is the extent of the damage as best I can tell: other pics:

Yikes! I am shocked it was only insured for $100. See if you can file a claim for the damage, and send it off for a new holder. Just make sure you get to keep it My luck the USPS or insurer would want to take possession of the damaged item.

Yes, I spoke to USPS and they said I could file the claim. I forgot to mention the seller had this shipment insured through a 3rd party insurer (Hugh Wood?)... he said USPS doesn't insure coins but from what I can tell they do if you use Registered Mail.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. File the claim with USPS for the holder damage. That should be more than enough to cover shipping and fees to NGC.

Yes, file claim and re-holder. Very nice specimen!

Honestly, the slab damage doesn't look that bad to me.

I don't know how you can put a price on a plastic holder. The coin isn't damaged. But if you can get $100 to cover the re-holdering cost that would be great.

Nice coin.
If you file a claim with USPS I can see them wanting to take possession of the damaged holder (and coin!) and taking YEARS to figure out what to do to get it fixed.
Just send it to NGC yourself and get it reholdered.

I asked them about that... USPS said, "no"... I retain possession but will have to bring it into my local office for them to take pictures.
Oh, the lady I spoke with at my local office even said the post master there would likely cover registered/insured shipping to NGC outside of the insurance if I talk to him and tell him what happened.

Would you all recommend becoming an NGC member (an extra fee ) or submitting the reholder request through a local NGC authorized dealer? There is one about 15 miles from me it looks like.

Nice looking coin indeed. So, the seller charged $35 for shipping and it was sent in an envelope, not a box?
I would talk to the seller about refunding the shipping charge, to help offset any expenses you may incur getting this resolved.

I 'almost' agree with Brand' but not quite. Any damage would drive my OCD right through the roof I I had decided to keep it 'as-is' So, I think that jbuck's suggestion is your best course of action (I had the same thought even before I read his comment) Pete also make a great case too - can't hurt to ask.... I'm sorry you have to deal with something like this.

That's a really nice coin. Wish I had one. If you take it to the post office to show the damage it might be good to download the ebay pics of it on your phone, show them to prove it wasn't damaged when you bought it and maybe also take the damaged package so they can see it. If you file a claim online send them the before and after pics. Please let us know how this turns out.

IF you are going to send back in to be re-holdered - you might want them to conserve your coin because of this spot of "contamination" that seems to be leeching outwards...............
