Hello Everyone! I hope that you're enjoying a very Merry Christmas! This coin is for sale ending Sunday, and I'm having a Dickens of a time trying to attribute it to a Sheldon #. There are only five varieties: the S-1 has the AMERI rev, so it isn't that one; the other four share a common reverse. The NC-1 has the widest LIBERTY, so nope to that; the S-2 has a divided date and strikes a very shallow impression, so no; the S-4 has a flattop date. That leaves the S-3 variety by default. and I just can't reconcile it to that: the strong base of the 1/1793 (and just look at that 9!). LIBERTY is tooled to death, the hair locks, etc. What do you think?

Very nice Chain Cent! Don't know much about them, but I do like them.

Auction ending Sunday night - so far a battle between bidder 4 and bidder 8.

The Date and LIBERTY are incorrect for the S-3: The 1 has a base, full serif on the 7, the bowl of the 9 points in a different direction, hairline under B is wrong...

In fact, there is no known obv. Chain variety where the 9 punch is orientated to the right (left or right of a 12:00 perpendicularity of the 9); this fooled just about everyone. There was a robust discussion about this coin on a Large Cent-dedicated social media page. Very interesting. Many thought this suffered massive re-engraving

Interesting. The reverse looks correct for an S-3, but the obverse is clearly different. The letter positioning in LIBERTY is off as well. New unrecognized obverse die? Or an incredibly deceitful counterfeit? Did PCGS drop the ball?
