I heard recently that dipping a silver coin in acetone can be picked up by TPGs and can result in a details designation. To limit the variables and what ifs, if an otherwise uncleaned coin is dipped in actetone and nothing else:
1) Does actetone leave a residue that can be picked up?
2) If true, how is acetone picked up on a coin that has been dipped in acteone and nothing else, what test is used?

If pure acetone is used, I don't think TPGs can detect this, because there's no chemical reaction.

However, if you use a tool to rub the coin, they might pick up rubbing marks or scratches.

If the acetone isn't pure, it can leave a faint, cloudy white film as it dries. This can sometimes be wiped away with a soft cloth.

Pure acetone does not leave a residue when dried. If there was something on the coin that the acetone dissolved (like PVC), some residual might be left on the coin after drying, but a second rinse in acetone should eliminate that.

Thanks for the replies.
That was my thinking as well, a double rinse to ensure residual is eliminated.

This.

Always use a flowing rinse of fresh pure acetone after a soak. This will make sure nothing is left when it dries. DO NOT USE WATER! The acetone will evaporate fast, no need to pat or wipe dry—which can leave behind marks or contaminants.

I'd be surprised if a TPG marked a coin down for an acetone bath even if they could detect it. Plenty of cleaned coins do not get details designations - the TPGs clean coins themselves ('conservation'). I believe they are mainly looking for harsh cleaning or abrasion.
