There seem to be an endless number of recent obverse and reverse 5-cent dies that feature these peculiar raised lines. They don't appear on any other denomination. Based on their appearance, they seem to represent the impression of hubbed-in filaments. But where those filaments are coming from and why they infiltrate the hubbing chamber so often, is a complete mystery.

Quote: I'll be darn Yup - they're definitely out there - I'm starting to get a nice little collection going. But they are actually quite easy to miss. They're probably not worth anything - but I think they are kind of neat - at least for now!

makecents asks, "Mike, are they similar in shape, size or formation or just random?" It seems to be random. The position and length of the lines is highly variable, although the width is pretty consistent. The path may be straight, curved, or undulating. However, I've not seen any with a hairpin curve or loop, suggesting that the filaments are fairly stiff.
