I have decided that it's time to sell my surplus coins. After years of collecting from circulation and auctions in order to create a full set of circulating decimals, I think I have a great set of meaningful coins. The current trend towards minting a proliferation of 'junk' coins in numbers that far exceed normal circulating coins and the country's apparent shift towards cashless transactions is also making me think that the days of standard designs are nearly over anyway.

So, I have embarked on a 'mission' to sort and prepare my surplus standard design circulating coins for sale in auctions. I started with 1c coins and included mint set only coins but not the 2017 possum or 2019 sqiggle coins. Same with 2c coins excluding the 2017 'roo coin (which is a design I liked and did buy one when they were released). Same again for 5c coins excluding bananas and moon landing coins. I was happy to include mint set only coins because they featured standard designs.

The 10c and 20c coins have been treated likewise - omitting NCLT versions. The 50c coins brought up a bit of a problem - do I include varieties like "double bars", "wide dates" or the standard design Coat of Arms from 2005? I have been trying to be consistent in what I include. Perhaps it doesn't matter?

Then I looked at $1 coins. I am putting the coins into plastic sleeves so I counted the number of coins released for circulation since 1984. I think the numbers are 60 'standard' releases (includes commemorative issues) and another 100 'junk' designs since 2019 (and those sets include even more designs that were not released for circulation).

Thankfully the $2 coins are relatively easy. There are very few "c" mintmark coins or non-standard issues anyway.

It seems a bit silly to include some mint set only coins but not some coins from sets where those coins weren't meant for circulation either. I am looking at it from a view of consistency in building these lots for sale. Maybe I am over-thinking it? I won't be selling everything straight away so perhaps taking the approach of "as is, where is", is the way to go? Maybe it's a case of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" type of thing? I would be interested in getting other people's opinions or better still, experiences when selling sets of circulating decimals. What to include and what to leave out? Looking forward to your ideas, thank you.

I am glad we share a passion for collecting coins SallyG along with thousands of others, so I will state the obvious and say that it may be hard to sell circulated 'sets' as other keen collectors may have their own 'sets' already or prefer to do as you and I , and seek them out through noodling or other means.

Do not be discouraged with my thoughts though as the ebay sales continue to sell.
We may all start with collecting coins from change and move on to noodling for better quality coins but then we improve our hoard by buying UNC or Proof coins for the sheer dazzlement of pure shinnyness.

I really need to do the same as you and relieve my collection of some extra coins that may be valued in someone elses stash.
Do not have the time and I do not sell anything though.
Wishing you quick and plentiful money making sales.

Why not check out what has been sold and take some inspiration from there?

Personally I think many buyers would prefer singles. Understandably listing individually takes more time and cost more per listing.

Thank you crab eater and gxseries for your interest and valuable contributions. You have given me some more avenues to consider. The point about trying to sell coins to collectors who have collected the same coins from circulation is certainly valid. I am aiming to make sure whatever I end up putting up for sale is something that I would be happy to buy. I do like to buy what I call 'lucky dips' at auction that consėst of mixed lots or accumulations but of course we are all different. Most of the coins that I have already set aside for sale are uncirculated and the others are at least EF grade or higher.

Selling single coins is just not a feasible option for me. The nearest post office is too far away and the cost of driving there and the time it takes and packing etc just makes that option uneconomical. My intention is to put together 'sets' or 'lots' and have them sold by an auction house. I have contacted a couple of them seeking guidance but they weren't very helpful. However, that is still the only realistic option at the moment. I will be travelling to the 'big smoke' in a few month's time and that is when I want to submit a few 'sets/lots' and see what happens.

Thank you for the link to the ebay seller selling the high grade sets. That is interesting and inspiring. If I can achieve results matching those prices I would be very content.

Ultimately the aim is to exchange my surplus coins for cash in order to buy other coins to fill the gaps in my collection. I am enjoying the challenge and the journey. Thank you for your interest and support. Happy hunting.
