I'm faily new to coin collecting and have a question, it's probably nothing but figured I'd ask anyway. I have several old Newfoundland Large 1 cent coins of various dates. One in particular, 1872 has the bust of victoria upside down on the reverse, is this a common mistake? I've had my local coin dealer examin it, and he seems to believe it's a rare error and worth something, I disagree as I purchased the coin fairly cheaply while on vacation.
Any insight?
Cheers Mark

The 1872 Newfoundland one cent piece was made in coin alignment instead of medal alinement. Your coin is how it should be for the year issued. All other cents made from 1865 to 1896 were in medal alignment so you have the only year it was made in actual coin alignment! Sorry it is very normal for that date and that date only!

According to Charlton all Nfld. 1¢ from 1872 have coinage rather than medal alignment so your coin is not an error. The value according to CCN trends is about $6.00

Thanks, I suspected as much. I found it hard to believe that an error like this would pass undetected until now. I think I need to have a serious chat with my coin dealer.. seems he knows less than he lets on.

Bobby sorry about that, Old habits from pervious forums where pictures had to be deleted after the forum was finished. I will certainly in future leave them up. Thanks to those who've welcomed me to the forum, it's great to be here and I will certainly continue to post here often. Cheers Mark

Here are the pictures, I've recovered most of my hard drive after it crashed. The shine is from the flash of the camera, the coins have not been washed.

It looks silver. Is that right? I have a few 1 cent coins from Canada and they are all copper.

The silver look of these coins are from the flash of the camera... they are indeed copper. I"m working on my photographing technique.
