Look at this cent I just found. On both sides it's flat with little detail. On a couple of pix I've got a normal looking 1998 cent side by side for comparison. Any thoughts on this ?

I have seen a few of these myself,i thought it was circulation damage or maybe a Grease Filled Die?,I'm not sure.

I think photographs of the whole coin would be a big help, but as it is... looks like post mint damage to me.

OK here's a few more pictures. There is too much luster for this to be normal wear. Could this be a struck through on both sides ? Notice the lack of detail on Lincoln's head and the reverse. Maybe it's nothing but it sure looks weird.

Looks like this coin was struck during the adjustment period while the pressure of the strike was too low to fully bring up the design. Or it's just a weak strike which I doubt.

I think this coin was struck by a very worn and deteriorated die. Also possibly struck thru some grease.

Looking forward to seeing what Chuck or Mike Diamond might have to say about this, because I have one at home (can't remember the date) very similar too it. I was thinking post-mint damage and was going to throw it in the reject bucket, but something about it made me keep it.

It's damage. I am not going to speculate on what caused it because nobody can tell...the point is knowing what can happen at the mint, and this isn't it.

I agree, it looks like it was struck, possibly between someing with a hammer to compress the details. One thing has always interested me, the fact that there is always somebody with too much time on his hands. ~ Jim
