I know I knew better!! Just wanted to hear it from you.. I bought a 25cent roll of "mystery roll" "Red Gem BU Lincoln Wheat Roll" off of ebay. Right away I new this couldn't be right.. The finish is like that of the newer plated pennies.. They kinda have that illusionist ripple effect.. When you look closer the lettering is thicker and the roll is way to consistent to be minted in 1956. They are all 1956D's with every one of them a mirror image of the other.. OK let me hear it..

Looks like the copper wash on a 22lr bullet or something.

Nothing looks out of the ordinary to me, here... with over a billion 1956-D cents minted, it stands to reason some would still be in BU rolls.
"The roll is way too consistent to be minted in 1956"
Not sure what this is supposed to mean... The mint has been capable of producing flawless coins for a long time now.. there's no reason a BU roll of common date wheaties wouldn't all look the same!

It looks good to me. I see no problem with this half roll.

What I also see here is 'ghosting'. Due to the continual impacting forces of Lincoln's bust (obverse) on the reverse die, as the die ages it begins to take on a bit of an incuse bend corresponding to the outline of the bust. Otherwise nothing unusual.

I think you did OK. I have a few AU-BU 56D's that I got in bulk purchases that are similar in appearance to what you have shown us.

They look ok to me. As in all transactions, if you didn't pay too much you got a good deal.

I too have "obtained" some of these 25-cent rolls and have mixed feelings about these rolls. I have received some very nice coins, 1954-S and 1955-S cents and some are too banged up to be "original" or bank wrapped for the damage I have seen, some are very scratched, yet some are brilliant. I would also ask others if this was a practice of the banks or the Mint to wrap these rolls like this. I believe that certain people wrap these rolls from their stock and sell them this way. Could anyone confirm that these were indeed put out to the public from the Mint or the banks like this??

Conder101, Thanks for your reply, I wonder if the banks did sell half rolls, I have not seen these before a few years ago. I was born in the mid fifties and find it odd, I have not seen these before this time.In any event, I am still collecting much tooooo much coinage, always that "one more coin" or proof set, or Commemorative etc.....

I think they are fake copies. Look at the gouge mark on the "E" in "ONE CENT". The mark is on every single one of them!

Quote: The mark is on every single one of them! You possibly only see the reverse of two coins, and the "E" is not very clear on both of them.
