I cherrypicked this 1957 D FS-902 Separated Mintmark variety on ebay but despite my best efforts, I was outbid. Looked like a nice MS-63 (books for $75) or better coin to me. Somebody got a good deal.

I had my eye on that one, but the bidding was getting a little overheated. Then I lost track of time. I think it's a nice coin, but $35 is probably a fair price for that variety raw at auction. Tropicalbats just recently sold a MS specimen of the Misplaced D for around $30.

Good eye for picking that one up on the radar. =)

I think the one I sold was probably a grade lower, but yeah, it went for $32 plus $3 shipping so I'd say $36 plus $4.25 shipping for that one wasn't a total bargain but pretty close to full price.

I would feel pretty good about it overall. You took a good swing at a strike right down the middle. The variety was correctly hunted and identified, the coin was a reasonably nice example, and the collector that won the auction paid basically retail on the coin—suggesting that you were competing with another variety hunter who also knew it was a Misplaced D.
