Thank you for the warm welcomes :)

So I opened a roll of 2009 P Lincoln "Professional Life" pennies from the US Mint. The end pennies were funky enough to peak my curiosity.

I don't think I was disappointed.

I believe this is a die gouge on both sides.

Pictures aren't great, but it could be bag marks.

I agree, bag marks or other incidental contact after the minting process.

LOL it's always something else.

never hear of bag marks. out of a roll?

can you post a picture of a bag mark? I couldn't find one.

However, it seems that at least one mark is coming off the flagpole. They're both raised as well.

The obverse has a raised bumps too.

Roll Enders will also often get damage (scrapes) from the coin roll wrapping machines.
Without seeing: the bumps could be plating bubbles.

The U.S.Mint sends newly minted coins in bags to the Federal Reserve. The F.R. then wrap the coins in rolls.

They go through a lot before they ever make it into rolls. They get banged around coming off the presses. There is even more banging around going into the Ballistic Bags.

You can see the process here...

thanks for the replies.

I still can't see this as being a bag mark when the metal is literally coming off the flagpole.

I understand PMD. But aren't bag marks mostly on "raised" portions of the surface and not the flat field?

anyway

I'm not done hunting LOL

You are thinking of circulation wear, which accumulates over time; and yes, it affects the higher points the most. However, if you can touch it, so can another coin. Every part of the surface is a target for a hit.
