I am clearly missing something. Jimmacr@eBay is Brian Ribar?
The zoomed out pics of that nickel show that the die face is practically melting on both dies. Denver must have run that tooling until the dies finally rattled apart.

What made the radial flow lines disappear and then reappear closer to the rim? Notice they are present around Liberty and north of the date, are gone around the rim side of the date, but appear again (slightly) right at the rim. Some of the other photos on the ebay listing show this more extensively. Could this be both Struck Through Grease and a deteriorating die?

Quote:Could this be both Struck Through Grease and a deteriorating die? I would have to agree. If this is Brian's listing, so be it, I do not personally know him but know he is familiar with Die Deterioration and much more than most here.

I feel it's too uniform to be struck by grease. The smoother fields under the letters is probably just because of the way that the cavities are deforming the die face. You can see that the area with the rim lettering on both die faces seems to be sinking a bit, and also forming a Ridge Ring.
