I thought I might have got lucky with a coin covered in gunk that, once removed, might reveal some fine details underneath. Alas, first minute of soaking ruined that delusion.

Quote: Don't stop trying, PlumCrazy. I resuscitated a crusty grimy unidentifiable "damaged" coin and found this underneath the crud: At one point, I got some deja vu related to a memory of cleaning some ancient Roman coins. I wonder what some of our coins that are literally in the wild will look like in a few hundred years. Quote: Any thoughts from folks on whether this nickel is a good candidate for nic-a-date? I'll give it a shot and post the results. Give me some time, we are prepping for the snowstorm that is supposed to roll in.

After the last photo above, I tried a bit more cleaning by soaking in acetone and then lightly buffing it (very briefly) with thin, smooth aluminum foil to brighten it up a little. (Don't hate, even typing that made me cringe) After aluminum After nic-a-date/acetone rinse: Aluminum again:

I believe nic-a-date needs a longer soak, not a rinse.
