This Nickel was so bad I decided to get a bit extreme with it.
As found:

BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited

After soaking in acetone for about a week while I was out of town When I returned, I used Q-Tips, wood toothpick, and a soft bristle toothbrush to get as much as I could:

BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited

Got more aggressive and used PB Blaster:

BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited

If anyone can see anything that suggests a date, let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.

I thought I might have got lucky with a coin covered in gunk that, once removed, might reveal some fine details underneath. Alas, first minute of soaking ruined that delusion.

I think I saw that on the polarity latter at number 4...*** Edited by Staff - The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. *** lol

Don't stop trying, PlumCrazy. I resuscitated a crusty grimy unidentifiable "damaged" coin and found this underneath the crud:

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Wow, that one is pretty rough. It does look better than before though. I can't see the date unfortunately.

Any thoughts from folks on whether this nickel is a good candidate for nic-a-date?

At one point, I got some deja vu related to a memory of cleaning some ancient Roman coins. I wonder what some of our coins that are literally in the wild will look like in a few hundred years.

I'll give it a shot and post the results. Give me some time, we are prepping for the snowstorm that is supposed to roll in.

After the last photo above, I tried a bit more cleaning by soaking in acetone and then lightly buffing it (very briefly) with thin, smooth aluminum foil to brighten it up a little. (Don't hate, even typing that made me cringe)

After aluminum

After nic-a-date/acetone rinse:
BU-Buffalo-Nickel-Beat-Up---Don't-Get-Too-Excited

Aluminum again:

I believe nic-a-date needs a longer soak, not a rinse.
