Tonight I found a proof coin from circulation: a 1994 dollar. Now, for those of you who are casino haunters and mule hunters, finding proofs is probably run of the mill, but this was my first proof coin, ever.

My mum had been given it in change earlier in the day, and was in the process of buying tea at Sizzlers. I spotted the coin's unusually dark mirrored fields, and hoped it wasn't a trick of the spotlights overhead. Hastily I offered to pay for dinner instead, and retrieved the coin from her later at the table. It was indeed a proof.

Sure, it's a bit battered from circulating through a couple of hands and purses, and the joy of discovery is soured somewhat by the almost certain knowledge that this coin would have been "liberated" from some poor guy's collection by a thief or some other lowlife scum who thought it was just a normal dollar.

Still, it's been rescued from further indignities, and found a good home, now.

Edit: forgot to add the picture. Silly of me.

What a waste! Does this mean it is now worth only one dollar?

I don't know what it'd be worth. Maccas says a proof '94 dollar is worth $13; I suspect an impaired proof will be about a third to halfway between the price of an undamaged proof and face value - say 4 or 5 dollars. Though I doubt a dealer would pay more than face for one.

Not sure. Either way, I'm keeping this one.

Nice pickup Sap, a bitter sweet one though it may be. I believe (read - hope) it came from a kid who was given the set and didn't appreciate it, rather than from someone who stole it. Either way, it is now being appreciated the way it was meant to be.

As for value, you may be surprised. I see a lot of NCLT that has seen circulation on ebay that sells for much more than you would think. My theory is some people simply like their coins to look circulated. An uncirculated coin simply would not fit into their collection.

We pulled at Florey C mm out of a pokie machine last week, but we were looking. My best find out of true circulation were an incuse 50c and a Smithy mm. My wifes grandparents got a Barcelona proof $1 in change about 3 years ago.
