I am beginning to catalogue and hopefully grade many of the coins in my late father's (now mine) collection. Here is a 1951 silver dollar for your inspection. I did not take it out of the coin holder before taking the photo. Should I do that in the future? Also, it was labeled as Arnprior. Does this seem correct? I appreciate any help and tips as I am new to this.

Hi JKU, I would say that from the pic's provided your '51 Arnprior would grade between AU-58 to MS-62. Also check this link to help you further. https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coin...ar-1937-1952I'm sure others will be along soon with more links and information.

I don't have a grade, but there seems to be a bit of crud or corrosion a couple of places near or on the rim.

I'm no expert, but I thought the Amprior designation, some including a die break, pertained only to 1955 dollars. Or maybe the designation was expanded to other years after the fact?

Well, the pic is pretty blurry, but I don't see any die crack, and I also see a little wear in Geo's hair, so AU-50 for me. I thought that an Arnprior had to be 1955 and got its name from a merchant from Arnprior ordering a huge stock of coin and an "Arnprior", named for the town, only dealt with those 1955 coins and those specific dies, with the D/C between the T and I.

From what I've discovered Arnprior also refers to 1950 and 1951 silver dollars with regards to the waterlines at the front of the canoe.
As far as being a bit blurry, this was my first time photographing and posting here so hopefully my skills will improve as time goes on.

I also think it is at least an AU-50 Arnprior because of what appears to be only 2 1/2 SWL instead of 4, which gets it an "Arnprior" designation instead of SWL. Hard to tell if it is wear or toning from the colour/photo though. I've seen 50's and 60's dollars with a pinkish-grey toning and looking at the "ADA" area on the reverse, I see the same in the cheek and jaw areas of the obverse which might appear as wear based on the pictures. Great coin though! If you aren't sentimental about your dad's labelling, I'd put it in a newer, even hard plastic capsule if you were to pop it out to take another picture. If "trends" mean anything to you, it values in the 150 to 250 range for AU-50 to MS-60

black spots are silver oxide spots; the wrinkles in the window film and if there's any rust or discoloration around staples (staple beside "C" in Canada) might indicate some moist air getting in. Swap out the holder and store in as dry a place as you can, would be my advice

Thanks for all the info. I have ordered some new coin capsules and 2x2's as a few more of the existing ones need replacing.
I also have a 1950 Arnprior that looks like it would grade out the same. I can take some new pictures of both the 1951 and 1950 when I take them out to replace the containers if anyone is interested.
I now regret not paying attention to dad's collection when I was younger. Now that it's become mine I am finding it very interesting identifying and getting some information on the coins. Lots to go through!

Never too late to start and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun going through the coins. Good luck and I hope you find some more nice ones!
