I've tried searching this forum and the internet for a reliable reference for paper currency values, but I've had no luck. I'd love to find some FMV equivalent for paper currency. Does that exist?

A friend of mine found a 1896 dollar bill in the back of a picture frame they bought an a yard sale and offered to sell it to me. I wanted to take it to a local dealer to see what they thought about it or if they wanted to buy it for her, but I'd like to go into the store with some knowledge of what to expect.

I don't have pictures of it yet, but is there info out there on what the value of a 1896 dollar bill would be for different grades? If there even are "grades" for paper currency like there is for coins.

Sorry, I'm new to paper money collecting!

There sure are grades for paper money . A photo or scan would go a long way to help someone with a knowledge of US paper money determine some sort of value for you.

When in doubt...check ebay for starters. Theres a few 1896 $1.00 bills on there now. It may give you an idea of what to expect (judging on condition)

Buyer beware with the 1896 notes....They are extremely popular with collectors and nicer examples command premiums.

They are often faked and copied for sake of how beautiful they are. Not for sake or trying to create a forgery, but copied for sake of art and just how great that particular series of notes look.

Poke around and do some reading on "Educational notes". That is the series in 1896 that we are talking about. If real then you could have stumbled across a real find. Different signature combinations and denominations can also affect the price you can anticipate for it's value in the collectible arena.

Good luck.
