Not the most attractive example. First set are about what it looks like in hand, second set with heavy lighting to get a better look at the surfaces.

CCF, what are your thoughts on this one?

Panzaldi, I didn't see anything obvious when I looked at it with a 5x glass. Just some circulation bumps and bruises. I'll take a closer look with a 15x loupe tonight and post an update on what I see. Thx, Adam

Authentic, honest surfaces, G 04, imo.
A TPG might give her a VG grade.

That's a fairly tough date in a tough series.

On balance, F-12 looks right for the underlying technical grade, though parts of the coin look a little lower (like the dentils and eagle's right wing - our visual left) and parts look a little higher (like the right hand and obverse shield and the talons and reverse shield).

Like many early quarters, it looks like it's had an older cleaning, market acceptable. I see the areas of concern that have been mentioned upthread. The scratches along the right arm look like they were intentional, rather than from contact. There is also a small, but much more recent, scratch on the reverse rim at 4:00-ish. I agree that collectively these would detail the coin. Add me to the F-12 Details camp.

It's still a solid coin because of its relative scarcity. If this was a common date Seated quarter, it would be a pass for me, but with a scarcer early date, I wouldn't hesitate if the price was right on it.

Having a closer look at this tonight, I don't see anything obvious that would result in a details designation, in my amateur opinion. There are plenty of random nicks, slight scratches etc from heavy circulation.

What looks like a punch mark on the left shoulder is just the incus design element that seems to be between the clasp and the other design element just opposite the incus part. Here is a pic of an F12 with the same feature. Then a pic of a high grade coin and the area that appears to be incus.

The rim nick at about 4 o'clock is also very slight, can't imagine it would details the coin.

Feel free to chime in with any additional thoughts on grade (from G4 to F12 so far) and a few mentioning possible details designation. I did check it and it is not bent, thank goodness, unlike the 1822 quarter I posted recently.

Edit: one comment about the 2nd set of pics above. I was using a bright LED at a low angle crossing from upper left to lower right for the purpose of lighting up the surfaces and defects. The rim scratch noted at about 4 o'clock on the reverse is well toned over, it just caught the light just right. Same goes for what some of you have said looks like a long scratch along liberties arm, there is none.

Cheers!
Adam

It looks like the Fine opinion carries the day. When I started collecting many moons ago I would have considered this a VG.

A scarce coin no doubt but one too many zeros. The PCGS price guide for a MS 63 is $10,000

For what it's worth, I had this at VG10. This was compliments of my father-in-law, he had it at Fine, paid $200 for it long ago.

i cant believe the new photos are showing pretty much nothing around that shoulder. not on the shoulder, but above it in the field

i'd say if those are what it looks like in hand, it grades straight.
