Not 100% sure, but this is definitely out of my comfort zone. See link below for a potentially helpful thread from our @carrs: https://goccf.com/t/436964Plus here is the clearest view of the overdate from PCGS: In both of these other cases, I see northward doubling of the second number one in the date (which I don't see on your coin), but am not sure if that is diagnostic. Added: And now that I look in my own collection of large cents, I see that same doubling on my low-grade example:

"The danger we all now face is distinguishing between what is authentic and what is performed." -----King Adz

Thank you, both. Good link, Spence, thanks! My Classic Head Large Cent is in a low grade, so it's hard to see it. It could just very well be my eyes and Pareidolia tricking me. I do think I can see part of the 9 below the 0. I could be wrong though, as I'm not certain.

I'm 99% certain this is S-281, or the 1810/09 overdate. There were only 5 die pairs used that year, and both the obverse and reverse look spot on for S-281. NGC's Variety Plus is a useful online source for variety attribution. Look at the distance between the 1 and 0 in the date, the position of the second S in STATES above the leaf, and the slightly tilted line below CENTS. Even if you can't see all the changes at the date, the other die markers are diagnostic. https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plu...s-1808-1814/

Thank you for the helpful link and information, Zurie! I'll have to bookmark that site for future references. I took a look at the link, then looked at my coin, and everything seems to match up. Looks good for S-281.

In my opinion your's is the overdate. I have two. I got one on ebay, the seller did not list it as such, didn't know or notice the overdate. Both of mine are low grade, here is the better one:

To me it looks like the 1 is on top of a 0. Is this common to do a upgrade to older excess coins instead of remelting them?

The "upgrade" was not done to individual coins from 1809, but rather to an 1809 obverse die. To save on time and costs, the 09 was filled in, then 10 was punched into the die to create an 1810 die.
