Thank you for the welcome wishes. I signed on to get some information on a token that my mother gave to me, along with some other old coins. I'm told it is a valuable piece, but I don't know much about it. The local collector told me it is called a "Sutler Token". The one side of the coin is marked "J. W. Cruikshank, Reg O. V. I. , 10 cents 81. The other side of the coin has a picture of what looks like a plain beer mug. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hi Buckeyegal , a sutler was a civilian merchant that sold goods and provisions to the army during the civil war. So what you have there is a civil war token.Try google and I'm sure you will find it.

Below is one listed at https://www.classicnumismatics.com : OH AF10C R-7 NGC-65 BN The picture is a little hazy due to the difficulty of photographing this token in its slab; however, this is a premium quality uncirculated Sutler token. It is sharply struck with medium brown color that is complemented with a colorful iridescence and nice luster. The surfaces can be described as semi-prooflike. This example is a contender for finest known. $ 1495

I visited the site, lots of pretty nice looking coins/tokens. Can I assume this is someone you have dealt with in the past? Always looking for a reputable dealer.

trdhrdr007,
This site has become my primary source for Civil War Tokens. I have purchased hundreds of tokens (Conder, Civil War, Hard Times, etc) and Political Medalets from this dealer and have never been disappointed. John Coker is a very fussy, high-integrity guy and his wife Catalina's photographs are beautiful. His descriptions of the tokens are always accurate (if anything, he scrupulously describes each flaw). Also, he has helped me find rare tokens not in his inventory.

Thank you Token Dave and wetglaswegian. I found the picture of my token. It is the one you found, Dave. I can't believe the price they are asking for it. Mine is pretty crisp, but has a little darkening around the numbers. What would a person like me do to make sure if I wanted to sell it, i'd be going to the best place?

Hi Buckeye Gal , quite honestly what I would do is read the sub forum on tokens here and make my 50 posts , two weeks is nothing in learning terms. You will find all kinds of knowledge and links , if I was going to sell it I would then put it up for sale with a firm price in the classifieds here. Theres no gurantee of a bite but word gets around pretty quick and there are some heavy duty collectors here. Theres always ebay but you leave yourself open to unreasonable fees and the possibility of a poor sale , people tend to bid less unless you are established with feedback on ebay. What I wouldnt do is rush into anything , from experience if you get an offer you can pretty much double it and set your price. Good luck :)

wetglaswegian, Thank you for the much needed advice. I have a lot to learn. I'll hang around and read what I can. I need to learn how to describe the condition of my token, and get better pictures of it, in order to sell it properly. This will take some time.

You are very welcome Buckeye Gal , we are all newbies here once , I came along with a hatfull of questions and zero experience.Youll find me still asking those "dumb" questions in the classics usually. So much to learn and its worthwhile I've found, your average Joe is like me , didnt know squat. With a little knowledge comes possibilities and opportunities. You'll soon see you came to the right place , the photography section is second to none.I still struggle to get a decent photo of a coin , sometimes I find I'm better going outside in daylight and getting my close up using the macro function,no auto flash to ruin the pic. A friendly enough crowd too, extremely helpful.Ive tried a few specialist coin forums BE Gal , and kept coming back here. Now I dont bother going to any other, the ID section here is the best I've seen , quick too.Free grading estimations , bit of chit chat now and then..pretty cool. See ya around
