Delete every single grading app you have on your phone right now. They are ALL horrendous.

The only thing this nickel is ........ is destroyed.

@Levi2487 - Don't believe the "App". This damaged, well-worn/circulated five cent piece certainly is not Au condition. As far as an error coin, I can't tell by the pictures.

That is a psychedelic looking bison. Unfortunately not worth much in that condition.

In this case, AU = Abominably Ugly...

Never trust those apps. They're horrible. Get rid of that app. It's useless. What you have here, is a badly damaged Buffalo nickel. Definitely not AU either.

Hey Levi2487, any chance that you could tell us which "App" you used? That way we can more pointedly warn others about the pitfalls of using it. Thanks!

It appears that at least some of these apps are AI based so maybe a severely limited or poorly chosen training data set would be part of the explanation for the poor performance. Who knows what the future may hold.

First,

What's left of the ribbons narrows it down a little bit. It's Obverse Design Variety 007 with a Denver mint mark, so it has to be 1926-D, 1927-D, 1928-D, 1929-D, 1934-D, 1936-D, or 1937-D. The remnant of the last digit of the date looks more like a 7 than anything else, so it could be 1927-D or much more likely 1937-D.

Obviously it is damaged beyond collector value, but it's still a nice novelty item to show friends. The AI apps aren't anywhere near a level of sophistication that can be useful to collectors yet. Somewhere down the road, with far better camera resolution, they may be useful in identifying die pair or other characteristics, but we're a long way from that now.

This makes me wonder if reliance on these apps is responsible for some the hilariously incorrect descriptions I'm seeing on ebay ads.
